Start with appropriate winter tires

All-wheel drive can help a car accelerate, but it cannot create tire grip for braking or steering. Tire compound, tread condition, pressure, and temperature suitability matter on every drivetrain.

Cold-weather systems to test

  • Windshield, rear-window, and mirror defrosting.
  • Washer-fluid capacity and wiper operation.
  • Battery condition or battery preconditioning.
  • Cabin heat and charge-port or fuel-door access.
  • Headlamp performance and ease of clearing snow.
  • Door seals, handles, trunk or hatch release, and ground clearance.

Clearance has trade-offs

A low car may struggle in deep unplowed snow, but many Canadian trips occur on maintained roads. More clearance can help, while also changing aerodynamics and handling. Match the car to the roads actually used.
