All-wheel drive (AWD)

A drivetrain capable of delivering propulsion to all four wheels, with system behaviour varying by design.

Assembly plant

A facility where major vehicle systems and components are combined into a completed vehicle.

Battery conditioning

Heating or cooling a traction battery to improve charging, performance, or longevity.

Body-in-white

The joined vehicle body structure before paint and most systems are installed.

Build date

The month, day, or period when a vehicle was manufactured; it is not the same as model year.

Canadian-built

A useful informal description only when the exact meaning—usually final assembly in Canada—is stated.

Cargo opening

The usable width and height of a trunk, hatch, or liftback entrance.

Certification label

A manufacturer label, usually in a door opening, containing vehicle identification and compliance information.

Connected services

Vehicle functions that rely on cellular data, online accounts, or remote servers.

Country of final assembly

The country where the completed vehicle underwent final manufacture.

Coupe

A passenger-car body style commonly associated with two doors and a more sloping roof, though marketing use varies.

Driver assistance

Technology that supports the driver while leaving responsibility for vehicle control with the driver.

Electric vehicle (EV)

A vehicle propelled by one or more electric motors using externally rechargeable battery energy.

Final assembly

The stage where a vehicle becomes a completed product; it does not describe the origin of every part.

Front-wheel drive (FWD)

A drivetrain that sends propulsion to the front wheels.

GVWR

Gross vehicle weight rating: the maximum permitted weight of a loaded vehicle as specified by the manufacturer.

Hatchback

A passenger car with a rear door that lifts with the glass and opens into the passenger/cargo area.

Heat pump

A system that can move heat efficiently for cabin or battery temperature management.

Hybrid

A vehicle using more than one propulsion energy source, commonly an internal-combustion engine and electric motor.

Independent inspection

A pre-purchase assessment performed by a qualified technician who is not financially tied to the sale.

Infotainment

The vehicle interface for audio, navigation, communication, apps, and related functions.

Liftback

A car with a sedan-like profile and a rear opening that includes the glass, similar to a hatch.

Model year

A manufacturer-designated year that may not match the calendar year in which a car is built or sold.

Parts content

A measure of component origin under a defined method; it is different from final assembly.

Plant code

A manufacturer-specific VIN position or identifier associated with a production facility.

Platform

A shared set of vehicle architecture, structures, systems, and manufacturing provisions.

Plug-in hybrid (PHEV)

A hybrid with a battery that can be charged from an external electricity source.

Powertrain

The systems that generate and transmit propulsion, such as engine, motors, battery, transmission, and driveline.

Recall

A safety-related corrective action covering specified vehicles or equipment, commonly identified by VIN.

Regenerative braking

Using an electric motor as a generator during deceleration to recover energy.

Sedan

A passenger car usually having a separate enclosed trunk and fixed rear window.

Software-defined vehicle

A vehicle whose functions and features depend heavily on software and updateable electronic systems.

Supplier

A company providing components, materials, tooling, software, or services to manufacturers.

Tooling

Dies, moulds, fixtures, machines, and equipment used to manufacture vehicle parts or assemble vehicles.

Traction battery

A high-voltage battery used to propel an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle.

Trim

A particular equipment and feature version within a model line.

Validation

Testing and analysis used to confirm that a design performs as intended under defined conditions.

Vehicle identification number (VIN)

A standardized 17-character identifier for a modern road vehicle.

Winter tire

A tire designed with tread and compound intended for cold temperatures and winter conditions.

World Manufacturer Identifier (WMI)

The first three VIN characters identifying the manufacturer and geographic allocation.
