Why the purchase year is not enough

A car sold in one calendar year may belong to the previous, current, or next model year. Manufacturing changes can also occur within a model year. Record the VIN, build label, exact trim, body style, drivetrain, wheel and tire package, and installed options.

Use a verification order

  1. Manufacturer’s Canadian specifications and owner information.
  2. VIN and certification label for the exact car.
  3. Original window sticker, build sheet, or sales documentation when available.
  4. Official recall and fuel-consumption information.
  5. Independent tests for observations, not as replacements for specifications.

Watch for version traps

A sedan and hatchback sharing a name may have different cargo space, assembly origin, suspension, engines, or standard equipment. A performance trim may use different brakes and tires. Compare like with like.

Verify the exact car.Model names can be assembled in more than one country, and plant assignments can change during a model cycle. Check the 17-character VIN, the certification label, the model year, the body style, and current manufacturer information.
