Evaluate infotainment, controls, driver assistance, software, subscriptions, repairability, and distraction risk.

Controls should support driving

Important functions should be understandable without long glances away from the road. Test climate, defrost, audio, navigation, camera, drive-mode, and safety-system controls while parked before judging them.

Ask about software and subscriptions

  • Which functions depend on a phone, data connection, or paid subscription?
  • Can maps and core controls work when service is unavailable?
  • How are software updates delivered and documented?
  • What happens when the original connected-service term ends?
  • Can independent repair facilities access necessary diagnostics?

Cameras do not replace visibility

Camera lenses can be blocked by snow, salt, darkness, or damage. Check direct sight lines, mirrors, pillars, glass area, and rear-window shape.

Privacy matters

Connected cars may generate location, diagnostic, usage, and account information. Review the manufacturer’s Canadian privacy information and app permissions.
